| Iowa Puzzle Sandwich |
Iowa Brownies - frosted and outlined with chocolate icing |
Iowa Breakfast -
Eggs, toast w/jelly, and bacon |
|
- An "Iowa" puzzle sandwich -- make a sandwich peanut butter and jelly,
ham and cheese -- whatever one wants. Use the cookie cutter to cut out
the basic shape then using a knife cut the outside pieces into
sections. You now have a puzzle with Iowa as the center. A fun and
entertaining way to serve up a truly Iowa sandwich.
-
Make mini-cheesecakes for your next "Iowa" gathering. Make the
cheesecake in a jelly roll pan and then cut out the shapes with the
Iowa cookie cutter. Drizzle chocolate sauce from a squeeze bottle
on the top-to spell out I O W A. Other types of sauces such
as raspberry or strawberry will work as well.
-
Use the same technique for making Iowa-shaped brownies. Either
frost and decorate with Iowa or put a simple "star" for your home town.
- Scramble or fry an egg or two - -once removed from
pan cut into Iowa shape OR put cutters on griddle and break egg into
the center of cutter (or fill with beaten egg/scrambled egg
mixture) When one side is sufficiently browned remove the cutter
and flip to the other side. Toast bread and cut into shape. Bacon
-- coming from Iowa pigs, is a perfect accompaniment.

Fudge can also be cut into Iowa shaped portions. Line a cookie
sheet with waxed paper and pat the fudge into the pan. Cut when
cool.
-
Ice cream -- After letting the ice cream set at room temperature to
soften, spread in a jelly roll pan. If you wish to decorate with
sprinkles (for example: red, white, and blue confettis for your 4th of
July party) now is the time to add those so they will freeze into the
ice cream. Put the ice cream back into the freezer to freeze
solid. Once it sets firmly remove and cut the shapes and transfer
them Iowa shapes to a plastic wrap lined pan and put back into the
freezer until ready to serve.
-
Sticky Rice -- Pack cold rice into a cutter then use a spatula to
transfer to a cookie sheet. Unmold and reheat in the
microwave. Serve with a hot gravy or with whatever entree is
planned.
-
Make Jello Jigglers.
-
Trace the shape for decorative purposes: outlines for T-shirt transfers, quilt pieces, and so forth.
-
Use as a "stamp" for wrapping paper -- or use it to make a stamp.
Dip the edges of the cutter into tempera paint and gently press onto
your piece of solid colored tissue paper or wrapping paper. Be
sure to wash the cutter immediately so the paint does not dry and ruin
your cutter. If you wish a solid image, trace around the cookie
cutter onto a potato or sponge -- cut the shape from the potato or
sponge with a sharp paring knife or other cutting tool. Use that
sponge or potato to make prints.
- Trace around the shape to make colorful state shapes for scrapbooking.
-
Press into the icing on a cake and then use a contrasting icing to make the outline.
-
Cut cheese or meat for a party/appetizer tray.
-
Make mini-pancakes -- either make small pancakes and cut the shapes
after cooking or use a spray oil to spray the cutter and griddle.
Set the cutter on the griddle, pour in the batter and just before the
cake is ready to flip remove the cutter and flip the pancake.
- Tie a ribbon on the cookie cutter. Use as decorations on your holiday tree.
- Outline cutter on cardboard, cut out and cover with aluminum foil, tape to cutter, fill
with jelly beans, wrap in plastic wrap and give as a gift!
- Make Iowa shaped cookies (how could we miss that use.)
-
Make ornaments for your tree. Use Salt dough or cinnamon dough (see below).
Salt Dough Ornaments -
- 2 cups flour
- 1/2 cup salt
- 3/4 cup warm water
Mix flour and salt in a large bowl. Gradually add water and mix well until a dough is formed. Knead dough until smooth and elastic (3-5 minutes). Roll to 1/4 inch thickness and cut with Iowa cookie
cutter.
Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Poke a hole in the shape (for hanging). A straw works well to make the hole.
Let set overnight to dry -- sometimes it may take longer. (You can
bake at 225 degrees for 30 minutes -1 1/2 hours - turn every half hour). Paint as desired.
Other suggestions:
- Color the dough with food coloring - instead of painting.
- If painting, use craft paint
- Put lotion on your hands before working with the dough.

Cinnamon Ornaments
-
1/4
cup of white glue
-
1 c. cinnamon
-
3/4 to 1 cup water
Combine glue and cinnamon in a
small bowl. Gradually add water and mix until dough is the
consistency of stiff cookie dough. Chill for 2 hours. Knead
on work surface sprinkled with additional cinnamon. Roll 1/4 inch
thick and cut with Iowa cookie cutter. Place on a cookie sheet,
lined with waxed paper. Poke a hole in the shape (for hanging). A straw works well to make the hole.
Put in a dry area/room for 4 days. Turn every 24 hrs. (You can
bake at 225 degrees for 4 hours or until dry - turn every half hour)
Decorate as desired and tie with ribbon hangars.
